I think it would be interesting to add a very simple evaluation function, perhaps something from TSCP or Gerbil or MSCP --- the amount you'd be able to search with such speed I'm sure you'd get would most likely more than make up for the lack of some knowledge. That would also be a lot easier than implementing crafty's evaluation in hardware.
