The ambitious Grand Prix event, featuring a host of very strong players and some
internet qualifiers, is finally under way in Dubai in the Middle East.

Players include Ponomariov, Ivanchuk, Anand, Svidler, Bareev, Lautier, Shirov,
Morozevich, Nikolic, Topalov, Ye, Dreev, Azmaiparashvili, Ehlvest, Leko, Van
Wely, Khalifman, Karpov, Grishuk, Acs, Short, Radjabov, Georgiev, Bacrot, and
Zhu Chen. In addition, there are some wild cards and local invitees:
Al-Modiahki, Belkhodja, Taleb, Jasim and Othman.

And the highly-controversial Internet qualification scheme has also produced two
participants: Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine and Maxim Novik of Russia. They have
just triumphed over Chepukaitis and Zeliakov in an offline encounter at Dubai
Chess Center. The internet qualification event was marred by allegations of
rampant cheating through the use of computer programs. Only four players were
thrown out of the tournament, but there were claims that the cheating was much
more widespread than this. (And some of the evicted players maintain their
innocence to this day).

The time control is 25 minutes for each player to complete the game, plus 10
additional seconds for each move, starting from move 1.
