Times will vary with settings and hash table size. On my 1.9G P4 I get:

19 seconds for the default Chessmaster personality
13 seconds for CM128 (the Chessmaster settings except for 128 Meg hash)
1:03 for my custom personality that includes 128 Meg of hash and selective
search = 12

My custom personality will generally out-perform CM128 on mate searches, but not
on this one.

I just turn it loose in the game window; not the solve for mate mode.

As far as getting diddled when you bought your computer, it is difficult to make
an assessment since I wasn't there to watch.
