Rook:   T  "Turm", tower
Bishop: L  "Läufer", runner
Knight: S  "Springer", jumper
Pawn:   B  "Bauer", peasant

French (some corrections):
King:   R  "roi", king
Queen:  D  "dame", queen
Rook:   T  "tour", tower
Bishop: F  "fou", insane
Knight: C  "chevalier", knight
Pawn:   P  "pion"
