It's a matter of the evaluation function applied to each node. If a lengthy
evaluation procedure is applied to each individual position studied the chess
program will be able to make a more accurate opinion of the desirability of
playing to reach that position... but if a short evaluation procedure is
applied, more nodes can be studied. Each approach has its strengths and
weaknesses. The end result will be differences in playing style. The best "fast
searcher" I know is Fritz 5.32. The best "slow searcher" is Shredder 6.
