If a lengthy evaluation procedure is applied to each individual position studied the chess program will be able to make a more accurate opinion of the desirability of playing to reach that position... but if a short evaluation procedure is applied, more nodes can be studied. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. The end result will be differences in playing style. The best "fast searcher" I know is Fritz 5.32. The best "slow searcher" is Shredder 6.
