I guess that you are wrong, Christophe.
A few weeks ago, I restored an old 16 Bit version of Comet for a comparison
match with the new version. On my K6/233, the old 16Bit version really heavily
suffered regarding performance (a loss of the order of 30 - 50 %).

It seems to me that the new processor architectures heavily penalize 16 Bit
applications. May be, someone really knows.
