Subject: A theory of ratings drift for the SSDF

I think it likely there is ratings drift for the SSDF.  Consider that for the
most part, these programs do not learn.  So "what you see is what you get" no
matter when you play them.  It is interesting to look over the programs on a
given platform in this list.  It appears to be a general trend that the ratings
have been pushed down over time.  Let's consider one example:

It appears to have lost 100 ELO over the span from 1996 to 2195.  And yet it is
the exact same hardware that was used over each test.

There are several things that might explain these trends.  Far better programs
injected into the pool will reduce the percentile where a given program fits.
Since (almost universally) the new programs are better given the stronger
hardware as well, we would expect a bit of downward push.  I do not know if the
figures are recalibrated each new list -- if a different seeding ELO is used or
in general how the numbers are arrived at.  If the method is exactly the same
each time, then the movement is certainly interesting.

It is also probably true that human ELO has drifted over the same time frame.
Better study tools and free excellent computer sparring opponents may have
lifted the human poplulation by a similar amount.  (Conversely, it is also
possible that the best players have died or retired, and the real ELO is
drifting downward for the human pool).  At any rate, I thought a historical
examiniation was interesting.  The data trends do seem to be pretty much
consistent from the small examinations that I have made.
