How long is the phantom of Deep(er) Blue going to continue to haunt this message
board? Apparently, even the opinion of a super GM (who in my opinion is not the
kind of person to indulge in commercial hype) does not count in this debate.
Neither do the many examples posted here of current programs (not even the very
strongest ones, sometimes) finding better moves than DB in the match versus
Kasparov, which is practically the only praxis available for the final version.
Nor do the many triumphs of current programs over GMs, which are always excused
or dismissed for one reason or another. Nobody can even figure out exactly what
the DB log files mean, whether it was searching 11 ply or 17 ply or something in
between, because the whole thing is substantially undocumented by the DB team
(Dr. Hyatt refers to a private e-mail from Hsu when offering "proof" of DB's
search depth).
Meanwhile, DB's specter floats about proclaiming itself the all-time champion
without playing a single move since 1997. Even its victory over Kasparov is
suspicious. Kasparov himself claimed to have forgotten Caro-Kann theory in the
final game, but it is strange that we see no other examples of his theoretical
blunders at move 7 (in an opening he once wrote a book about!). Maybe he also
forgot to tie his shoes and zip his pants that day. Others have surmised that it
was a misguided anti-computer idea, that Kasparov must have thought DB would not
find 8.Nxe6, but who can believe that he would be so ignorant as to overlook
that the book would guide DB through the sacrifice?
I'm soooo looking forward to the Fischer - Deeper Blue match; who's interested
in merely Kramnik vs. Fritz?
