There was a company called Nuron (bought by Intel) which made an SDRAM DIMM
containing not only SDRAM but also a large Virtex part. (As far as I know they
figured out a way to accelerate public key encryption using their architecture
thus caught Intel's attention - nice for servers.) It's kind of an interesting
idea because you could switch control of the SDRAM itself between the x86 and
the FPGA, so you could pass a lot of data back and forth.

Maybe something like this is what you had in mind?

I don't know anything about the latest x86 processor busses. It is a good idea
to move off of PCI - the question is what to use instead that's available in
consumer class PC's. Or what to use that's within your price range.
