I find the poll re the upcoming Smirin-Computers tournament at Kasparov chess very interesting. Although not scientific, it is safe to assume that those taking the poll follow the developments in human-computer matches, tournaments, etc. The poll takers believe Smirin, a 2700 player, about #15 in the world, will be beaten by the computers by about a 44% to 39% margin of the poll takers. There are four programs playing Smirin, three off the shelf, I believe, and one Hiarcs 8 soon to be released. The hardware is nothing spectacular, commercially available PCs. It seems clear to me that the currently available software on commercially available PCs, based on recent results, is playing at the upper levels of GM strength, most likely 2650+, or more. To say that they can only play at 2500 or so is just simply not true any lomger.
