After playing with the optimisations, the best I managed was 27% slower (30min test of epd positions) with gcc3.0.4-2mdk shipped with Mandrake 8.2. My guess is that the dynamic optimisation (profile generation) helps the Intel compiler a lot. A feature gcc seems not to have? Frank
