That's the highest compliment ever given in CSS to a single program! I remember Nimzo98 when released received that compliment too, but they directly added to it that also an engine of nimzo would get released 'soon', so most readers probably concluded they didn't need to buy nimzo98 because an engine would get out (some months later corrected that it would get out some months later and not 'soon'). My guess would be Donninger earned a factor 10 less on the engine nimzo than he did on nimzo98. Nevertheless i can't remember any program received *ever* the compliment that it was way better than fritz. Having a bunch of world titles didn't impress them anyhow. Of course chessbase had some legal issues with weiner and schroeder, my guess would be that cost of all those legal issues together is closer to 10 million dollar of lawyer costs, than it is to 1 million dollar, in the past 20 years. That's of course a peanut compared to the earnings. If you earn like chessbase a lot (i do not know how much. My estimation 15 million euro a year, having a huge organisation they sure MUST make something like that otherwise they can't afford such an organisation), then it's not amazing to understand why a certain product gets popularized more than any other. Suppose you sell for every 5 Shredder engines sold about 100 fritz versions. Suppose now that if you say shredder is better than fritz, that you sell 3 times more shredder versions and 50% less fritz versions. You earn a few million less then! Sources from outside chessbase estimate that for engines like junior the sell rate is 1 to 100. Shredder sells probably not so bad within germany. But 1 to 100 is a very accurate estimation , would be my guess. Surely if you see how they do their PR. Really someone should translate some recent issues of CSS one day to english *litterary* and post it on the web. Nunn would get a heart attack if he read his in english written article back in german. >On April 14, 2002 at 16:02:19, Ulrich Tuerke wrote: > >>On April 14, 2002 at 11:51:15, Thomas Lagershausen wrote: >> >>>>Nunn obviously knows nothing from computerchess here, already >> >>Are you sure that this statement by Vincent is wrong, Thomas ? >>I guess, Nunn knows how to use chess databases and programs, but I wouldn't bet >>that he has deeper knowledge about the structure of a chess engine. >> >>IMHO, the above statement by Vincent is not an insult, just a claim. >> >>Uli > >saying that he does not know the structure of a chess engine and saying that he >knows nothing about computer chess are different statements. > >Nunn used analysis of chess programs in his books so it is clear to me that he >has experience with chess programs. > >I do not know if nunn has deeper knowledge about the structure of chess programs >and I do not give an opinion about it. > >Uri
