38...hxg4 39.hxg4

   (39.fxg4? f4 followed by ...e4+ and wins]

   (39.d7 Kxd7 40.hxg4 fxg4 41.fxg4 Nxg4 42.Bc1 Nf2+ 43.Ke3 Nh3 44.Kf3 Nf4
    45.Kg4 Ne6 46.Kf5 Kd6 47.Bb2 Nd4+ 48.Kxg5 Kd5**)

39...f4 40.Ke2 Ne8 (40...Kd7 is similar) 41.d7 Kxd7**

The two positions marked with ** are among the key ones -- if Black is winning
in those positions then Smirin missed a fairly simple win. (And if either one
is a draw, wouldn't it still have been worthwhile for Smirin to try?)
