How is Sparring mode implemented if it isn't done in the engine? (I was told >in an answer to a previous message I posted that the GUI implements Sparring >Mode, not the engine.) How can the GUI know which bad move to force the engine >to make? If I understand Sparring Mode correctly, it is implemented by comparing the "best move" calculated in a shallow search to the best move calculated in a deep search. ie the engine reports that move A is the best move after a 6-ply search, but after reaching a 10-ply depth it decides that move B is better, because there is a move A' which refutes A. In sparring mode the Chessbase GUI decides to make move A -- regardless what engine was used -- and at the same time signals that there is a tactical hit available. Something like that, anyway.
