If I understand Sparring Mode correctly, it is implemented by comparing the
"best move" calculated in a shallow search to the best move calculated in a deep
search. ie the engine reports that move A is the best move after a 6-ply search,
but after reaching a 10-ply depth it decides that move B is better, because
there is a move A' which refutes A. In sparring mode the Chessbase GUI decides
to make move A -- regardless what engine was used -- and at the same time
signals that there is a tactical hit available. Something like that, anyway. Can
anybody else describe it more accurately?
