That game came to my mind also. I do not have Shredder, so I am not sure about it's learning ability. I am surprised that it would make a similiar mistake. That is still an issue sometimes for the programs, they are not perfect, but they play at a high level even with their flaws. I am impressed when any person wins a game. Your assessment of the Comps vs GM matches is on target. That is a human problem, we get tired, frustrated, prone to mistakes. However, we also are very adaptable, can over come our fears/frustrations and make great individual efforts. I think GM Smirin is a good challenge, I expect the programs to win a couple of games, but I expect GM Smirin will not get tired or frustrated. GK vs DBII is another example that supports your assessment. The match may be decide in this next game with Junior (as black). Junior will need to hold a draw or this match could be over (however, Tiger and Hiarcs could still have winning individual results). I would like to see Rebel and Gandalf in this as well.
