Subject: The Bishop that couldn't ... then could

Author: Alastair Scott

Date: 13:57:39 04/17/02

An amusing game which I've submitted to Tim Krabbe (who, from his response, may
be on the way to putting his site back online :) as an exemplar of one of his
favourite themes, the 'unmoved piece' - the White queen's bishop remains on c1
for 41 moves then, once it starts moving, it doesn't stop until it's captured.

More seriously, it shows, more starkly than any of the other dozens of games
I've played, some of the problems with PalmOS programs (Genius is similar) which
stem from the feeble processor and, at the moment, can't really be solved:

- better tuning of the opening book is needed. I really don't think they should
play the Nimzo-Indian as White (3. Nf3 is probably better); both programs
repeatedly get into big trouble with the c-pawns becoming isolated and then,
eventually, dropping off as they can't 'see' that they need to drum up
counterplay;

- it's very unlikely, on current pocket hardware, that the King march from h7 to
b3 would be seen (a far too lengthy manoeuvre).
