Thank you for your advice. However, as a chess program author, I am not primarily interested in better play on my own computer, but rather on good performance of my program on computers of others. Those other people may have incomplete egtbs similar to mine, so I want my program to play reasonably well in such unfavorable situations. Hence my solution of turning egtb probing temporarily off.
