Subject: Rating List for "Small PC" !

Hello !

I had a conversation with a friend , who asked my
advice on what chess program to buy for his Palm ( he is rated
around 2100 ELO by FIDE).I made clear to him that not all programs
are the appropriate for him . I thought that firstly I
had to show him a Ranking List , but where to find one ?

Since there is not an official rating
list I was delighted by the idea to create and constantly maintain one .

Since my Palm is just one small device I need your help.
I can't test many engines and my time is very limmited partly of
my work (I am a web site developer and also I am
teaching chess at schools) and partly of my two web project
( digichess.gr and Pyotr).

I have talked this with the rest of the " Small PC Team " ,
which have grown to 3 members ( myself , Pavel Mahamood and Jorge Pichard ) ,
and we have exchanged useful opinions. I would like to
hear your comments on this too. At the end of this post you will
find my standards for creating this rating list.

I would like to ask your help ( those that have Small P.C )
and who owned CT for Palm, PocketGrandmaster, Pocket Fritz, Pocket
Genius and Pocket Crafty to test your engines and submit your games .
If you already have some submit them too.

Please , don't forget to include the Hardware Information
( model , speed ) , the version of the engine and the time controls.

I think the Small PC / Rating list must be published at a monthly basis.

First edition will be published this Sunday (21.04.2002) !

Here is my thoughts on how to create the first
edition of this rating list :
----------------------------------------------
A. How to choose engines
   1. Engines which their author give an estimated ELO rating
   2. Engines which have played games ( official or test games)

B. Starting ELO
   1. It seems that 2100-2150 is a good approximation

C. Calculating ELO
   1. Using ELOStat v1.1

D. Eligible Rated Events
   1. At least at this very first edition of the list all events will be
accepted.

E. Necessary PGN Information
   1. Players names [x]
      (+ versions)
   2. Hardware Info [x]
   3. Time Control [x]
   4. Organizer's Name [x]
   5. Result [x]
   6. ECO Codes [*]
   7. Date [x]

F. Publishing
   1. Monthly

I would like to thank the rest of the Small PC team members
for collecting all this info ! Thank you Pavel and Jorge !!

Best regards,
Marountas John
