Rebel Decade 3.0 definitely doesn't belong into the group of the strongest
freeware programs anymore (only on Fridays maybe ;) ).

Nearly all the other free programs are availlable ( at least also) as WinBoard
engines.

Probably the most reliable source for their rating availlable currently is

Although it is based on blitz games it does seem to correlate well with games at
longer time control; only Amyan might be overrated a little IMHO.

So this would be:

1. Yace
2. Crafty
3. Pharaon
4. Amyan
5. Little Goliath
6. AnMon
7. Bringer
8. Delfi

From the engines that aren't WinBoard compatible only SOS should belong
somewhere into this group, too.

Two WinBoard engines that look a little underrated and might belong into the top
group at longer time controls might be Gromit and Nejmet.

Competition is very tough and close at the amateur top - and several newcomers
have mixed up the ratinglists a lot recently (especially Delfi comes to mind).
