Here are some programs that have special talents:

Crafty, Amy both can use multiple CPU's with full effectiveness.

Arasan, Bringer both have a nice GUI of their own.

For some really tough positions, Phalanx is often the only free program that can
solve them in a reasonable time.

If you don't have a copy of SCID, you should definitely get one.

I don't see what the appeal of Arena is.  I have a copy, and I tried it, but I
don't really like it.  Maybe it's better for German speaking people or
something.  Not sure what might draw people to it.  I use chess GUI's to either
play against an engine myself or to play large contests.  You can't really
administrate a large contest under Arena.

As I see it, there is no such thing as the top 5 chess programs.  Counting all
the different versions, I have literally hundreds of chess programs on my
computer.  Quite frankly, I need them *all*.
