Of course he can! That's been his job that has made him millions of dollars! That is precisely why is the great chess player that he is. What do you think a GM of his calibre does? He and Kasparov and the other world class GM's spend months preparing for particular opponents, analyzing their previous games looking for weaknesses, preparing opening lines far into the game. Now when you realize that Kramnik has made his living doing that against ONLY previously played games, you realize what an advantage it is to be able to have the software in advance. Imagine how much of an advantage it would be to know what Kasparov would play in a certain situation, and to be able to have an entire month to poke around at all Kasparov's weaknesses. That is essentially what Kramnik is going to be able to do, with one additional advantage, in that if he had that kind of access to Kasparov's inner thoughts, Kasparov could easily change strategies because he is also a talented player. Fritz is a computer program however. Computer programs run algorithms. They don't change a great deal. Certainly there will be small differences which will cause Fritz to not make the exact same move for the same position everytime, but you can bet it's "style" will be similar, and finding weaknesses in a player's style is what Kramnik has made his living on and been so successful at. The strategies that work against Frizt might not work against another top program, just like the strategies Kramnik uses against Kasparov might not work against another top human player. As far as difference in computer's causing Fritz to play differently, I imagine that Kramnik could easily get his hands on a machine of equal or greater speed than the one Chessbase will be using. If he didn't want to purchase it with his own personal money, I'm sure the Russian government would help him out if he really wanted to go that route. I'm sure he has quite a setup anyway :) >Regards, >M.Scheidl
