It is important to recognize excellence. Both Intel and Microsoft do have
excellent compilers. With the Intel compiler I can often get better results
than Microsoft, but not always and sometimes the difference is very tiny. The
latest iteration of the Microsoft compiler has definitely closed the gap.
Sometimes, I also get better results with the MS compiler, and it depends also a
great deal on the exact target machine architecture. One example is Arasan,
where the MS compiler always seems to produce a better binary. In general, the
MS and Intel compilers are better than all the others for the PC platform.

Aside:
I think Eugene Nalimove is a running example that much of the MS-bashing is pure
nonesense. He is a demonstration of the fact that many brilliant programmers do
work there. The fact that MS dominates the world is not a pure accident and not
pure marketing hype. Much of what is produced is excellent and answers real
business needs. Everyone likes to try to knock the king of the hill off of his
perch.

Not that MS has never done something awful (STAK).

About Vincent:
Vincent sees everything in black and white. He does not see shades of grey when
it comes to computing decisions or chess playing or other things that I have
observed. As far as jumping down people's throats -- well, he does that from
time to time. But he is an equal opportunity throat-jumper (a search will
reveal I have been the target a time or two, for instance). I have no problem
with Vincent in this regard. If he jumped on one or two people and was always
sweet as sugar with everyone else, I think it would be different.

As to the copyright -- If Vincent is using Eugene's code, I think he should ask
for permission. If Eugene says no, there are alternatives.
