Exactly. The earlier beta versions were not especially reliable for eng-eng
matches IIRC. There are no rational reasons to use older Arena versions.

The other possibility is some of the options settable under "Install and select
engine" like "Engine priority". There could be a difference between low and
normal. However, I suspect that engine configuration is the culprite.

The irony regarding the Arena GUI is the supposedly easier installation
procedure over WinBoard. The number of available settings and features seems to
nullify that advantage somewhat. It's a good GUI, no doubt about it. But in the
end it's the user that determines how succesfully it is used or misused.
