This is not a header issue... The only thing that will make it crash and burn is a corrupted book.bin file. There are indices on the front that will wreck things if they become corrupted... or if the file becomes truncated due to insufficient disk space when copying it or building it... The PGN won't cause problems however... at worst case it will build a book with zero positions... you can see what it found as far as number of games, number of moves, etc, in the statistical summary it produces when you build a new book.bin from a pgn file...
