Crafty played at least one game that went beyond 500 moves. It played more than one that went way over 200 against a player "SKIPPER" (a human) on ICC. At one point winboard/xboard had a 500 ply (250 move) limit for the internal move list. Skipper blew that in a 3 0 game... (he was a human, remember, not a computer)...
