I don't see the issue of severity as being important so much as I am interested in the attitude of the person doing it. The theft of a dollar is not a big deal, but the person doing the stealing needs to take responsibility for having done it. What I see here is not "I stole a dollar", but rather "There is nothing wrong with stealing a dollar now and then, because the amount is small", and "It is OK to steal a dollar, or perhaps more than a dollar, depending upon who you steal from." I trust that you get the idea. I am concerned about software copying, and I am particularly concerned that people do consider it to be such a value-neutral thing to do. I am sure there are people who wouldn't be caught dead stealing from a supermarket, yet will copy a $300 software package without even blinking. It's not that the person has no conscience, it's that their conscience never even becomes involved. bruce PS. I would also like to ask you not to lump me in with Bob, as you did in another post. His arguments differ from mine, as do his reasons for making them. I like Bob, but I want to make it clear that his religious and political framework, which he chooses to discuss upon occasion, and I do not choose to discuss ever in a computer chess group, is distinct from mine.
