Fritz will be on a faster computer, but remember that Smirin played a much shorter time control than Kramnik will be using (I think). I also don't know how much preparation time Smirin put into actually analyzing computer play and anti-computer strategies, but it certainly is less than or equal to the time Kramnik will have put in against a single program instead of the four that Smirin would have had to prepare for. I'd expect to see wins from Kramnik along with some draws, but I think any losses after seeing what Smirin has done is probably cause for us flaming Kramnik :) I don't recall Smirin ever really being in any real trouble either. He came close to going up 3-0 IIRC. He would have finished with a 6-1 score had he been able to pull out games 2 and 3 for wins. Anyway, I agree. I think a lot of people have overestimated computers because sub-par masters have lost to them (IE masters who are very strong against human opposition but aren't familiar with computer's styles). It's clear now that when you have a player who is both very strong and knows how to use the program's weaknesses against it, that the results are not pretty for the computers. Even so, it's only a matter of time before humans can't beat computers anymore. Even now there are but a handful in the world who are capable of the task. Russell
