Stuart, I don't have most of your answers, sorry. However, here's my situation
in case it's of any value: I bought a 1.2 GHz Athlon 11 months ago. I hope to
buy a new motherboard/CPU (my motherboard is an old rev and cannot accept newer
Athlon XP or MP units) when the .13 micron AMD chips start shipping. I may wait
a little while for the price to drop a bit, but I will buy if I can afford to.
I think 2.4 GHz will then run cooler (and obviously faster) than my 1.2 does
now.

In the past, when contemplating upgrading my PC or my Mac, my rule of thumb has
always been to upgrade when the new system is at least double the MHz and at
least one generation CPU newer. I went from 486/33 (in 1991) to Pentium 133 to
P2/400 to Athlon/1.2, and from 68000/16 (in 1988) to 68030/33 to 604e/180 to
G3/400. (I have not upgraded to a G4.)

Due to the relatively low cost of (and ease of installing, I hope!) motherboards
and CPUs these days, I may not wait for the next generation CPU this time, but
just jump from Athlon/1.2 to the new .13 micron AMD chips that are due very
soon, keeping the same case (etc.).

  -Roy.
