In the '70s and early '80s I studied chess quite a bit and played in a lot of tournaments. In the '90s I played in only 2 tournaments and did not study, but I repeatedly focused on not doing anything rash. In those 2 tournaments (8 games total) I was "lucky" in 4 games. IIRC, I got 2 draws and 2 wins in 4 games where I probably should have lost. (My total record was 5 wins and 3 draws.) In previous tournaments I had instead lost (or drew) numerous games I should have drawn (or won).
