One of the reasons is that just in case your opponent does not make the expected
move, then you have another cut-off move to try. The PV stores first you first
line of moves and counter moves, then it takes your second best move and its
counters. As the depth of moves grows greater, you are at an advantage if you
store potential cut-off moves for each variation. Thus the PV grows into a
triangle as the depth increases.
