Very good point Ed.
Actually I followed the post-mortem game analysis by Smirin himself, and at some
point somebody pointed out that Bc5 was stronger than Bc3. Everybody including
Smirin (IIRC) agreed on this, so I think it is indeed a good positional test
position to remember (together with the am Bxc1 on move 29).
