If the interface specs are clear, integration of the two should not be a big issue. Mark could hire a GUI person to work on that part, freeing him up to focus only on the engine. It's not inconceivable that Hiarcs could be sold to run under that. Weren't Gandalf and SOS commercial Winboard engines? I know nothing about copy protection under Linux, or even if anybody has ever bothered/dared to try CP on that platform.
