I also use 4 parameters (among some more, heh)

ply   denotes the ply (starting with 0)
depth denotes the remaining depth

'ply' is always increased by 1 in a subsequent call to search(), whereas 'depth'
may be unchanged (or even increased) due to extensions.

I guess it's just a bad name for the variable. He probably means the score of
the best move, if there is one. (or the eval of the position in a terminal node)
Therefore it's not just a bad name for the variable but a wrong one. :)
