However consider this. A man buys a ticket to a concert. He makes a color xerox of the ticket that cannot be distinguished from the real thing. He gives the copy to a friend. Stealing or not? Same thing with a currency note. I write software for a living, so I may not be completely unbiased. But I do not view giving away software as a legal transaction, unless you give away the original copy along with the license agreement. I would have no qualms with that. Now, I do not have any problem with your making 3 copies for your own use as backups. Perhaps the issue is one of perception. Perhaps the laws vary from country to country. But it certainly seems unethical to me.
