I remember that at one time the startup speed of programs using a lot
of libraries was limited by the speed of the dynamic linker, which was
getting a bottleneck for software using a lot of them (KDE was most
affected). I thought this was solved a while ago by having KDE start
apps in an alternate manner (forking them off a 'kdeinit' process),
but perhaps your experience is related to this.
