Well, first off all I´d like to say I´m not an expert in computer chess
programs.
I BEG YOU TO HELP ME because I´m troubled with Crafty.
I know Crafty is the best free chess program, but I don´t have the knowledge to
run it correctly.
I´ve been playing with Arasan, that is not as strong as Crafty, but it is very
simple to use.
A few days ago I downloaded crafty executable file (wcrafty-18.7.exe)and then
the source code (crafty-18.9.zip). I put them in the same folder. I already
downloaded the latest version of winboard. My first question is: Is it correct
to build the program with different versions of files?(wcrafty-18.7.exe
&crafty-18.9.zip)Or should I download the crafty-18.7.zip file?

Well, then I downloaded the opening books files(book.bin, bookc.bin & books.bin)
in the same folder than the executable file. I run the wcrafty-18.7.exe and a
message of error appeared. The program located the bookc.bin file but not the
others. The message said that the book.bin was of an old crafty version and the
program couldn´t locate it. My second question is: What should I do with the
opening book files? Can them be recognized by the program if I only put them in
the same folder? Or should I write any command?

I downloaded the medium common games too. I did what the read.me file said and
the program began to read the book.txt file, but it stopped and I have to quit
the program. What have I done bad?

But there were more problems. When I wanted to run crafty under winboard(I wrote
in winboard.ini what I had to write) the program quit unexpectedly. My third
question is: What happens? What should I do?

At last, I want to download the tablebases, but I don´t know what to do. I know
I have to build an .rc file and write some command lines. But the problem is
that I don´t know what files should I download from the TB site. There are a lot
of them; .exe, .zip files, and a lot of stuff. What files should I download to
have the tablebases? What steps should I follow to do crafty use them correctly?
Can crafty play well without the tablebases?

I ASK YOU TO HELP ME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
