As a follow-up on the comments about books, I've written a couple of books. In each case I signed a document explicitly signing over all rights to the publisher. At that point the book now belongs to the publisher, but without that I would still own the copyright. If I wanted to regain the rights to the the books I would be forced to negotiate with the publishers to buy them back. On the other hand, if I am an employee of a company and writing something at their specification it will typically belong to them. To avoid the possibility of confusion in this area, companies will almost always include a document the employee must sign that explicitly assigns all rights to the company for any work the person creates at their direction while an employee.
