Jonathan Schaeffer has written an excellent book about Chinook, called "One Jump Ahead". It was published by Springer-Verlag in 1997. It doesn't go into much technical detail about Chinook, concentrating more on the story of Chinook's matches against Marion Tinsley and other human players, but it will give you some idea. Chinook does *not* play perfect checkers -- contrary to a persistent rumor, it has not solved the game. There certainly was not some one specific bug that was removed in 1994 that suddenly made it perfect. But it's pretty safe to say that there is no human player living that can beat it in a match. Probably Tinsley couldn't even do it were he still alive.
