I'm not sure that hacking the software as I outlined is illegal.  From what I
remember reverse-engineering is legal in USA and illegal in the UK (or maybe the
other way round!?).  What about the ChessBase CBH format?  This has never been
published but Chess Assistant can read / write it - I assume that ChessBase
cannot stop them.

Yes I think a stong encryption method is by far the best way to go - much better
than the legal path IMO.
