I agree, Fischer feared no one, not even Karpov.

Fischer had a set of demands, IE where to play how much etc. and the FIDE said
NO! It was a shame that the FIDE and Fischer didn't reach a mutual agreement.

Chess is poorer for it, regardless of what we may think of Fischer as a person.
