I think that the main motivators are (order may differ for each person) money, competition (to be the best), fame and just because it is a challenge (like climbing a mountain). There is some money to be made, but not for very many, that is a shame. I for one hope we can retain our current talented programmers and encourage/develop the next generation of programmers. I am a fan of the free programs, but I wonder what effect they have on reducing the monitary incentive to stay in this field (we accept that our GM's get paid, I wonder if we also accept that our programmers should get paid?). Just my 2 cents.
