i have to disagree.

1. shredder is not "good in tactics". tactics ís in fact one of its weaknesses.

2. hiarcs is a knowledge program.

the main difference between a good search based program and a knowledge based
program is IMO not how to evaluate ONE position ACCURATE and right.

its not a static feature !

Its a dynamic feature.

A good knowledge base program will build up its position different than a search
based program. it will react different on attacks or movements of the opponent.

it will build an attack or a plan. it has certain knowledge how to evaluate this
position DIFFERENT than the search based program.

fritz is stronger than hiarcs in fast games (blitz 3' + 2")
BECAUSE it is a search based program and is faster in the first plies.

hiarcs oversees something.

but let them play 1' or 3' per move, and you will see that search is not
important anymore when you reach a certain level of search depth.
suddenly the ideas behind your moves, the evaluation gets more and more
important.

the search trees grows into such a monster that search cannot compensate , is
not coming deeper. now a good knowledge is important to play a sensible move.
its not anymore important how to win a pawn. cause the opponent will not allow
you to catch it. the position is balanced and the right idea decides.

shredder is a little bit like genius was. hiarcs a little more aggressive.

fidelity (spracklen) = hiarcs vs. mephisto (lang) = shredder if you want.

but shredders strength is IMO notn tactics.

also its strength is not MAKING / DOING something .

shredder it much like genius. registering everything. waiting for the mistakes
of the opponents. hiarcs is different.
hiarcs is doing something.

i have no boring hiarcs game here so far.

the games with hiarcs are a different thing than any computerchess game i have
seen for years.

a difference.

shredder , fritz and junior and others very often find the same moves, the same
evaluation, the same pb move. they behave like good friends to each others.

they get used to each other over the years. they have been tuned against each
others for many years. hiarcs is like a foreigner coming from an island
somewhere in cuba or sansibar.
