The authors of chess programs always recommend using the opening book designed for that program. Also these moderen programs learn from there wins, losses and draws; this information is incorporated into the opening books. So, then is it fair to play Hiarcs 8 vs. Fritz 7 (that has already played hundreds of games and learned from the experience) or do we reinstall both programs to their original release versions. Perhaps another alternative would be to merge all of the books together and then let the programs play from a unified book, that way neither one has a particular advantage. If you think that I am exaggerating the effects of the learning feature, then let me remind you of the Fritz vs Junior match in which Junior had a 6 game lead but still lost the match.
