I think use of Winboard interface is a good advice. With WB, you can play
automatically some hundreds games against other engines. Just by observing, you
may detect quickly what is wrong with your program, specially systematic errors.

The first rival of my program is TSCP. I think TSCP is one of the weakest open
source codes so it is very suitable for beginner's engines.
