In the past, it was claimed that it's too hard to create a resizable (TrueType) font. But only pawn, rook, knight, bishop, king & queen characters are needed -- that's SIX characters by my count! The characters do NOT have to be recreated from scratch for Black vs. White pieces, so it's not even 12 but simply six font characters that must be created. There are software tools galore that should allow even a beginner to do this in a very short time. Many free, amateur chess apps have used resizable (TrueType) fonts for the 2D pieces and thus allow the user to resize the board as he/she sees fit. Easy for the programmer AND most flexible for the user. What more could you ask for?
