FIDE didn’t consult top players: Anand

PTI [ FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2002 2:04:27 AM ]

CHENNAI: Former world champion and world No. 3 Viswanathan Anand is not exactly
happy with the way reunification of the warring factions in world chess has been
achieved in Prague.

‘‘FIDE did not even consult its top players who, by virtue of doing well in
their championship cycles, do not get an opportunity to be part of the
unification plans,’’ said Anand in a press release, issued by his agents.

After almost 10 years of wrangling, FIDE members and disgruntled players had met
in Prague, which followed the Eurotel chess trophy, won by Anand. The meeting
was the outcome of proposals put forward by American GM Yaser Seirawan in
February last.

On the meeting, Anand said Seirawan had informed him that a solution had been
reached, the same day he won the Eurotel Trophy. ‘‘Kasparov would get his
rematch entirely on the terms he had long been waiting for. The deal was made
even before all parties came to a common ground to discuss these matters. It was
surprising that this was presented as a solution for the chess world. Hopefully,
there will be proper championship cycle from 2004.’’ he said. Anand did not
attend the meeting after seeing that it was just a formality.

According to the unification plans, Braingames champion Vladimir Kramnik will
play the challenger as planned through a qualification cycle in Dortmund. On the
other hand, world No 1 Garry Kasparov will get a shot at FIDE champion Ruslan
Ponomariov. The winners of these matches will play a grand final sometime next
year not exceeding 12 games.

Anand’s academy: Anand also plans to set up a chess academy within the next two
years, a period during which he hopes to work with talented young Indian
players.

‘‘In the next two years, I will have more time to spend in India. During this
period, I hope to work with the present crop of young Indian talent. It will be
the best time to lay the foundation for that,’’ he said.
