So, bottom line, you were able to get smoothly resizable 2D (flat)
boards/pieces.  That's great!!

The fact that you did it without using TrueType characters for the pieces is
interesting too, but to my small brain what you did seems much more difficult --
I guess it's because the result looks nicer?
