>1) Is there any limitation as to how many bitboards I can use per square? Not really. I currently use 18 bitboards for just the board presentation. This is w/o anything for eval. >2) Whats an alternative to bitboard approach? A very famous one is 0x88. (you should be able to get info about this in the CCC archives) Maybe someone can post a good link also to a site which describes some board representations. (the links I have seem to be outdates :( ) >3) How is it better (if it is)? I didn't try them all out, just 3 of them, to be honest. (the 8x8, representation, the 12x12 and bitboard) I don't think there's an optimal board representation per se. The important thing is to know the strengths and the weaknesses of each and code accordingly. For example bitboards are not really the best choice for simple and/or very fast move generators, but they can be very helpful in the eval - if used right. But then, 0x88 is also very attractive.. ah the choices. :) Sargon
