I think most people have forgotten exactly what
these chess programs are for. Its a tool for helping you play better chess,
Study your games, Learn new openings, Having it tell you where you've messed up,
etc...Having multiple programs gives you a choice. Lets keep using the Chess
program for exactly what they are for, and not critisize because they didnt live
up to our expectations.
Mike.
there are all sorts of reasons people buy programs. i dissagree with the above
statement. if the consumer only bought programs to improve their play, they
could have stopped buying with Fidelity. most all chess players cannot beat any
of the old programs, so i conclude they could still be learning from the old
programs. but instead, chess program enthusiasts keep buying programs, most with
every release that comes out. i feel the biggest market for commercial chess
programs are the people that view programs as an arcade game.
some of these guys are chess fans, but most of them do not sit around playing
their program to increase their personal level of play.
now it has become a game that they can play program vs program on the internet.
the reason most say, after they buy a program, that they are disappointed, is
because they were hoping that their new purchase would win at the servers more
than their other games. but we know this wont happen, for one thing 1000's of
other competitors are at the same servers with the same new release that they
are playing against. it has been my experience that with every release, if there
was an increase in strength, it has been slight, even though it shows an
improvement in some test positions or in some tournaments.
