I am curious as to why more programmers don't make short-lived trial
versions of their programs available for download. In deciding what engines to
buy, I am not really interested in whether Program A is 15 points better than
Program B running on the fastest available software. I'm interested in the
engine's style and features, running on the computer that I have. The only way
to assess that is to try out the engine -- in a version that becomes inoperative
after, say, two or three days. Are there technical obstacles to making engines
available in this way, or is there some other reason why this is not widely
done?
